Great Smokey Mountain National Park
Another great national park straddling the line between a time long gone, and modern commercialism. Cades Cove, Newfound Gap, and the Roaring Fork Motor Trail embody the pioneer spirit, while nearby Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge deluge you with tourism. Quiet mountain streams, waterfalls, wildflowers are found practically everywhere. The historic "buildings" in Cades Cove and other areas of the park remind you of how hard life was in the 1800's. Mid-Spring finds the park coming alive with wildflower blooms, while the Fall color display is exceptional as well.
Due to its proximity to a large portion of the US population, the park seems to be forever busy. You definitely need to be up and on the go in the early morning hours to avoid the crowds.
Blue Ridge Parkway
Here's another item to add to your "must-do" list: drive the Blue Ridge Parkway in the Fall. Pack a cooler, relax, and enjoy the scenery! While you're at it, stop off in Asheville, NC and visit the Biltmore Estate.
