Heceta Head Light

Last Update: November 3, 2009

One of my two favorite lighthouses from a 2005 trip to Oregon and Washington. The park rangers were friendly and provided an enlightening history and tour of the light.

You often see shots of the light from a height equal to the level of the lens looking out over the ocean, but I could not duplicate the shot. First you have to climb the hillside behind the light - no problem there - but then the tree growth (as of 2005) blocks the best view of the light. Without breaking branches, I do not see how those photographs were made.

Tight shots encompassing the entire light from the surrounding grounds are difficult without a perspective control lens due to the lack of space around the light itself.

Another classic view is from a scenic viewpoint about a mile south of the light. The day we were there it was extremely windy and difficult to get a sharp shot due to lens vibration. I burned a whole roll of film in the hopes I would get one or two decent shots.
