The Columbia River bar is one of the most dangerous places for shipping on the west coast. To help navigate the treacherous waters, a lightship was posted at the mouth of the river. In 1979 the fourth and final Columbia was decommissioned and replaced with a buoy. She is now located in Astoria, Oregon and is designated a National Historic Landmark.
