Split Rock

Last Update: November 3, 2009

This is my favorite lighthouse along Minnesota's North Shore. If you arrive before 10am you can enter grounds for free, but after 10am an entrance fee is charged. It's a small price to pay to help preserve this well-maintained piece of history. A visitor center houses a theater, historical displays and a gift shop. In addition to the light itself, the fog signal building, three keepers homes and their associated barns/garages are preserved. The view from the bluff is incredible and the friendly staff dresses in period costume to complete the experience.

For Photographers

There are a number of vantage points for taking the oft-seen shots of the light: the highway overview; the lighthouse grounds itself; the tram-way stairs has viewing platform about half-way down; and a short walk toward the campgrounds provides the view pictured here.
