This year marks my return to hunting deer after an eight year absence. Forget about shooting anything, it was a great feeling to be back in the woods. There is something magical (and a little unsettling) about being out in the forest before first light. At least for me, I'm out of my comfort zone. Who knows what could be out there. And then ever so slowly the jet black darkness starts to brighten and you begin to hear nature breathing. A far off crow call, or the rustle of foraging squirrel disturbs the monotone gray world surrounding you. Chickadees flit from tree to tree and gradually the black and white landscape dissolves into color. You find yourself amazed at how noisy the solitude really is - and all you had to do is listen.
