Tillamook Air Museum; Tillamook, OR

Last Update: November 3, 2009

Tillamook is probably better known for its cheese, not its aircraft museum, but you're in for a surprise! The collection here is housed inside a World War II Blimp hangar and the sheer size of this wooden structure is amazing. There were actually two hangars built at this site but unfortunately one burnt down. The history behind the hangars is worth reading and the fact that one hangar was erected in only 30 days is incredible. The hangar contains the museum, a small 50's style Cafe, and a gift shop.

The collection primarily spans World War II through modern times and for a private collection, it has an impressive number of military planes. When I visited in 2005, there were three main locations of aircraft: outside the hangar, inside the hangar, and a protected area inside the hangar. The planes under the "tent" were in much better shape than those sitting in the hangar.

For Photographers...

Photography inside the hangar is difficult with the hangar doors closed due to the obvious low light levels - bring a tripod if you have one.
