Richard I. Bong WWII Heritage Center

Last Update: November 3, 2009

The Bong Heritage Center, located in Superior Wisconsin, is dedicated to honoring and remembering all those involved in World War II, especially a local aviation hero - Dick Bong. For those who haven't heard of him, Major Dick Bong is America's "Ace of Aces", the leading combat pilot of World War II with 40 aerial victories which earned him the Medal of Honor. Given the state of modern air warfare, I do not foresee this record ever being equaled.

The primary attraction is a beautifully restored P-38, painted in the same scheme as Bong's plane, "Marge." In addition the center contains a small theater, a number of different exhibits and memorabilia, and a gift shop.

For Photographers

Video and flash photography is not allowed in the museum. I think my tripod flagged me for some special attention as several of the staff members were watching me closely as I roamed around. A wide-angle lens is needed for a decent shot of the P-38, but even then it's a compromise given the tight spacing around the exhibit.
